Leinster Leader 25th October 2007

Plans have been lodged for a major development which will transform the centre of Athy town. Kilkenny based building company Paddy Raggett and Co has made an application for a mixed development at the back of Leinster Street, which will run parallel with the existing street and front onto the People’s Park.
The Leader understands that a number of gardens and yard properties behind Leinster Street have been bought up in preparation for the development, in addition to a four acre field.
The plan envisages a 50,000 sq ft anchor store. There are also plans for a number of smaller units – 23 in all, as well as five office units. The development will also include 87 residential units, mainly apartments, and a high rise car park block capable of accommodating 500 vehicles.
There are plans for a major chain store to locate in the centre and while the identity of this tenant is not clear, it is widely known that both Tesco and Dunnes Stores have ‘scouted’ for a possible location in Athy.
Local councillor Mark Dalton said the development effectively represents a new commercial street for the town. “Between the cost of acquiring the property and design and building costs this will be a substantial project,” he said. “The council is coming close to finalising the retail strategy as part of the Town Development Plan. We looked at 11 potential locations for a retail centre and this was one of them,” said Cllr. Dalton.
He also said a number of issues need to be taken into consideration, including traffic management and plans Greencore have for the development of the significant Minch Norton site.
“I’m pleased that there is interest in retail development because it is badly needed, but we need to get the best possible development for the site and for the town,” warned Cllr Dalton. “It will also be important to take into account the interests of existing businesses.”
