Set between the valley of the River Suir and bounded by the Silvermines to the Northwest and the Slieveardagh hills to the Southeast, the area around Thurles is rich and varied in scenery and outline. Located in the heart of County Tipperary, Thurles is a thriving commercial and business centre. It is the largest town in North Tipperary and enjoys a strategic position in the South of Ireland. Thurles is highly accessible by road, rail and air. A good road system connects Thurles with all the major towns of Tipperary and further afield to Ireland's primary cities and towns. By rail, Thurles is linked with the country's principal ports, towns and cities.
As well as a rich culture and history, Thurles has a vast array of sports and leisure clubs and facilities. Thurles racecourse is 1 mile to the west and Thurles Golf Club (18 Hole) is 1 mile to the south of the town. Thurles is well known for its sporting history and is the birthplace of the Gaelic Athletic Association. Semple Stadium hosts a number of major Gaelic games each year. Other sporting amenities in the town include greyhound racing, squash, rugby, hunting, equestrian, swimming, soccer, watersports and angling.
The Source Arts Centre has recently opened in the town. This is a 250 seat theatre, art gallery, library and café presenting a program of film, theatre, dance, ballet, opera, music, family events and visual art exhibitions.
Thurles prides itself on its high quality of education and indeed Thurles has been recognised nationally on numerous occasions for the high achievement of its schools at all levels. Education facilities in Thurles are of a remarkable standard. Students at all levels from Pre-School to Adult Education are catered for in the town. The town has four Primary Schools and four Secondary Schools. It also boasts a Third Level College, Tipperary Institute, which is going from strength to strength. This is Ireland's first electronic campus. Special courses can be arranged in the Tipperary Institute for any industry in the town.
